Create positive vibes with negative ions.
For those of us who live next to the sea and the mountains there is something in the air apart from love – negative ions! Yes, odourless, tasteless, and invisible molecules we are lucky to inhale in abundance in such environment. What a privilege! Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge. They are created in nature as air molecules break apart due to sunlight, radiation, and moving air and water.
Apart from the nutritional properties, the ocean provides a variety of other health-giving elements:
• Sea water for the wellbeing
Research shows the sound of waves alters wave patterns in the brain inducing a deeply relaxed state. Rejuvenating the mind and body. Floating in water means blood is diverted around from the lower limbs, pumped towards the abdominal region – the part of the body near the heart – as we are no longer stand upright. Fresh blood being pumped around the body brings more oxygen to the brain.
• Vitamins of the air
Negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy. They protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make us sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation (air conditioning depletes the atmosphere of negative ions, but an ion generator re-releases the ions that air conditioners remove, so if you do use air conditioning also make an acquisition of an ion generator). Those with respiratory problems and pulmonary disorders, cystic fibrosis, asthma will rip amazing benefits. A help in cure for hay fever, colds and sinus infections, as it has strong antihistamine effects and is a good decongestant.
• Sleep enhancers
We sleep more soundly after a day by the sea. Sea air is charged with negative ions that accelerate our ability to absorb oxygen. Negative ions also balance levels of seratonin, a body chemical linked with mood and stress. We feel alert, relaxed and energised. Did you know the smell of the seaside is caused by dimethyl sulphide gas, given off by the sea, and not ozone? Get a good lungful potion of negative hydrogen ions!
• Wellbeing and skin conditions
While the sun positively affects endorphins (group of peptide hormones occurring naturally in the brain, when released, increase our body’s threshold for pain and affect the way we feel emotionally, chemically, endorphins are similar to morphine) and benefits our endocrine system, the sea contains two compounds – salt and potassium chloride, which provide healing for such conditions as psoriasis and dermatitis by sealing the damaged skin and allowing the mend. Bathing in seawater increases the elasticity of the skin, improves its tone and hence the outer appearance. Sea water has antiseptic properties and may reduce an infection associated with the eczema.
Negative ions = positive health!
P.S. And don’t be afraid of the seaweed. It may not look as appealing or inviting and we all love the turquoise transparent waters but seaweed baths have long been popular aid for rheumatism and arthritis. This is thought to be due to its high concentration of minerals, trace elements and polysaccharides. Its high salt content acts as an effective agent for promoting chemical exchange and drawing out toxins from cells – which is why it is often added to face masks and body wraps… Apart from nourishing, it’s purifying/ detoxifying. We have it all for free, enjoy!
