Gut, bacteria, brain, immune system connection

Back to bacteria again. Gut, bacteria, brain, immune system connection and how extremely important this connection is from birth (and even before the conception) throughout life. Healthy gut and the colony of beneficial bacteria are frontline defence of our health. A microbiome is the ecological community of commensal, symbiotic, and pathogenic microorganisms that literally share our body space. Activities performed by these bacteria resemble those of an organ, leading research and science to liken gut bacteria to an ORGAN (a forgotten organ)… We no longer must be afraid of bacteria.

Very interesting article. Instead of sterility being the rule, passing down germs from mother to child may be an essential part of reproduction. We already know babies are born without a fully developed intestinal mucosa, and need interaction with bacteria to basically jump start their immune system, an immune system which relies on the healthy gut bacteria of the mother… Human milk – a biological powerhouse.

“We’re at a tipping point of our knowledge, and the current paradigms will probably change in the next few years. We are in this stage of perpetual discovery and exploration. The microbiome is at a stage where we were a hundred years ago with genetics.” – Dr Bordenstein
